RDU Terminal 2 Weekly Progress Report

Sep 11, 2008

This Week's Highlights:
Crews Begin Installing Furniture in Terminal 2; Runway Project Begins

RDU Airport, NC – This week's highlights at Raleigh-Durham International Airport:

Terminal 2 Furniture Designed for Tech-Savvy Travelers
This week, crews began installing the furniture in Terminal 2. Approximately 20 percent of the seats will feature electricity and USB ports for travelers to charge their laptop computers and mobile devices.

Over the past several years, demand for electrical outlets has grown at airports across the country as travelers recharge their mobile devices and work on their computers before their flight departs. While older terminals were not equipped to meet this growing demand, Terminal 2 features electrical outlets in designated seat clusters in each boarding area.

The seats offer travelers not only electrical outlets, but also USB ports and a table to place their belongings.

The new seating is not the only tech-friendly feature in the terminal. The retail store Techshowcase will feature a variety of mobile devices and accessories, along with an educated staff to assist customers.

The Apple iPod kiosk also offers high-tech gadgetry. Much larger than a vending machine, the kiosk will offer consumers a variety of electronic devices. The machine is shaped to provide multiple sides for customers to view products, read detailed product information and learn how to use the devices.

Runway Rehabilitation Project Begins
This week, crews temporarily closed the runway adjacent to Terminal A to perform rehabilitation work on the runway surface, lighting systems and signage.

The closure will not affect travelers, but residents living near the airport may notice a slight adjustment in flight patterns as commercial aircraft is routed to the runway adjacent to Terminal C. Also, during the closure, visitors to the airport's Observation Park will benefit from increased airplane activity.

The closure is scheduled to be completed in early November, weather permitting. During this phase, crews are resurfacing the runway and taxiway connectors, as well as replacing signage and lighting systems.
