This Week's Highlights:
Local Contractor Plays Role in Terminal 2; RDU Law Enforcement Uses Segways to Navigate Airport

RDU Airport, NC – This week's highlights at Raleigh-Durham International Airport:

David Allen Company Lays the Groundwork in Terminal 2
One of the features of Terminal 2 is nearly six acres of terrazzo flooring, which is the work of local contractor David Allen Company. The Airport Authority chose terrazzo for its durability; the flooring also complements the theme behind the design of the building: handmade/mind made.

Terrazzo flooring covers high traffic areas in Terminal 2, including the airline check in, concourse and baggage claim areas. The company has also worked closely with the architect and artists featured in Terminal 2. Craftsmen with David Allen designed terrazzo flooring to complement the work Gate of Earth, which will greet arriving and departing passengers.

Specially designed terrazzo will also complement one of the major works of art to be featured when phase two of the building opens in 2011.

This is not the first time David Allen Company has worked with RDU. Craftsmen with the company were responsible for the installation of the terrazzo medallion depicting the Wright Brothers flight that was embedded in the floor of RDU's original Terminal B. The medallion still greets passengers today near the Southwest Airlines ticket counter.

With headquarters in Raleigh, the David Allen Company is the largest marble, granite, terrazzo and tile contractor in the U.S. To date, the company has installed more than 37 million square feet of terrazzo. Its work can be found in airports in Washington D.C., Miami and Charlotte, as well as at the Pentagon and Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Segways Help RDU Law Enforcement Navigate Airport
When phase one of Terminal 2 is completed this fall, it will span nearly 550,000 square feet, almost twice the size of Terminal C, which will be demolished early next year. With the recent purchase of two Segway personal transportation devices, RDU law enforcement officers are ready to respond quickly in the new, and larger, terminal.

RDU's law enforcement team has been using Segways as part of a trial for nearly three years. The success of the program led Police Chief Donna Waters to purchase two devices for regular patrol operations. In addition to the Segways, RDU Law Enforcement will continue to use bicycles to patrol the terminals.

“We found that these devices are versatile and give our officers an incredible amount of mobility,” said Chief Waters. “They also help us to achieve faster response times.”
