RDU Ready for Potential Winter Weather
RDU Airport, NC – Raleigh-Durham International Airport is making preparations ahead of forecasted winter weather scheduled to arrive in the area on Friday, Dec. 18. While the impact to RDU is unclear at this time, airport officials recommend that anyone planning to travel through the airport over the next few days contact their airline before heading to RDU.
Airport officials have an FAA-approved snow and ice control plan and are prepared to activate the plan once precipitation begins to fall. RDU does not close and airlines make decisions individually about flight cancellations.
The airport is currently monitoring runway surface temperatures, preparing snow removal equipment and placing staff on stand-by to respond should winter weather begin to fall at RDU.
Crews begin snow removal operations when one-half inch of wet snow, or two inches of dry snow has accumulated, per FAA regulations. They will also treat airport roadways, parking facilities and sidewalks once precipitation begins falling.
