RDU Parking Garage Wins International Parking Institute Design Awards
RDU Airport, NC – Parking Garage 3 at RDU International Airport has won two prestigious awards from the International Parking Institute. The IPI awarded the airport with an Award of Merit for design for a parking structure with 800 or more spaces and a President's Award- Honorable Mention for aesthetics.
The Award of Merit is a second-place award and is based largely on the functionality of a parking structure. The facility at RDU competed against 13 other parking facilities and was the highest-placing airport garage facility. Considerations for an Award of Merit include way-finding, access, convenience, and safety for both vehicles and pedestrians..
The President's Award-Honorable Mention is a second runner-up award, and is based on the aesthetics of a facility. The structure at RDU competed against 15 other facilities and again was the highest-placing airport garage facility.
Tom Quesenberry accepted the award on behalf of RDU at the IPI Annual Awards Conference in Las Vegas on June 5. Also receiving awards were the Engineer, Walker Parking Engineers/Consultants, Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana and the Architect, The Freelon Group Inc. of the Research Triangle Park.
Parking Garage 3 is the first phase of the terminal area parking garage development program that is currently underway. A new 6,150-space structure is currently under construction adjacent to Parking Garage 3.
