Feb 15, 2023

Board Approves Policy on RDU’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future

RDU continues to outpace 2022 passenger traffic despite the expected seasonal slowdown in January. The airport served 884,984 passengers last month, down 13.7% from December and up 38.8% from January of last year.

“This has been a great start to the year at RDU as we continue to add new destinations, giving travelers even more options when they fly,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “RDU is thriving as airlines expand and passenger traffic outpaces last year’s levels.”

Avelo Expands, Relocates to Terminal 1: Avelo Airlines is now operating out of Terminal 1 after changing terminals overnight. Avelo launched six direct flights from RDU this month that give travelers greater access to destinations in Florida, including Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Palm Beach, Sarasota and Tampa. Avelo is strengthening its commitment to the Raleigh-Durham market by opening a base at RDU, stationing an aircraft here and creating at least 50 jobs. The airline began service in 2022 with one direct flight and quickly expanded to seven destinations.

Taxi Service: Taxi Taxi will continue to provide curbside, walk-up service to airport guests under an agreement approved by the Airport Authority Board on Thursday. The Authority will enter into an agreement with Taxi Taxi to provide curbside, walk-up service. It will also operate a 24-hour call center to be open 365 days a year with an initial fleet of 90 taxicabs, including a minimum of two wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Taxi demand has remained strong throughout the current fiscal year, with Taxi Taxi providing 4,941 trips to the airport and 87,277 trips from the airport. The agreement will have a term of three years with two, one-year extension options.

Sustainability Update: The Board approved the RDU Sustainability Policy Thursday that establishes and formalizes the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority’s commitment towards a sustainable future. Board members also received an update on the RDU Sustainability Management Plan (SMP). The SMP sets the framework for future sustainability actions at the airport.  You can read more about the airport’s sustainability efforts at rdu.com
