RDU Earns Highest Rating During Annual FAA Safety Inspection

Aug 21, 2014

RDU Airport, NC – Raleigh-Durham International Airport recently passed its annual FAA Part 139 Airport Certification inspection with no discrepancies, the highest rating a commercial airport can receive. The Part 139 inspection is an annual review required for an airport to renew its operating certificate.

“Our team’s first priority every day is to operate a safe and secure airport,” said RDU President and CEO Michael Landguth at today’s monthly meeting of the Airport Authority board. “The results of this inspection underscore our commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of our passengers,”

FAA inspectors were on the ground at RDU August 11 – 13. The inspection included a review of the airport’s certification manual and emergency plan, detailed visual inspections of the airfield, markings and lighting and a test of the airport’s emergency response procedures.

Passenger Numbers Grow by More Than Eight Percent
The number of passengers traveling through RDU grew for the fifth month in a row. The numbers were released at today’s board meeting.

In July, the number of passengers departing RDU grew by 8.2 percent compared to the same month last year, while the number of passengers arriving at the airport increased by 8.9 percent compared to July 2013.

“Over the past year, airlines have put more seats and flights into our market,” said Landguth. “As we have said many times before, if more seats are available, our customers will fill them, illustrating the strong demand our region has for air service.”
