RDU Begins Random Vehicle Inspections

RDU Airport, NC – The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority began conducting random inspections of vehicles approaching the airport terminals today at 4:00 p.m. These inspections are in response to the Department of Homeland Security's announcement that it was raising the threat level from yellow to orange. RDU received a directive from the Transportation Security Administration Sunday outlining the additional security measures.

Signs inform drivers of the inspection process as they enter the airport. All vehicles are subject to random inspections as they approach the terminal area.

In addition to vehicle inspections, passengers will see signs advising them to report any unattended packages to airport employees. As always, the Authority will maintain a strong police presence throughout the airport.

Customers traveling to the airport should be reminded that the US-70/Lumley Road entrance to the airport terminals will be closed with access to Park and Ride 4 remaining open. Access to the terminals will be restricted to the entrance accessible from Aviation Parkway and Airport Boulevard. Drivers will be able to exit the airport via the US-70/Lumley Road exit.

The airport last implemented vehicle inspections in May when the Department of Homeland Security raised the threat level to orange.

When the threat level is changed, the Authority works closely with the TSA to identify and implement the necessary security changes.
