RDU Adopts New Security Measures
RDU Airport, NC – Modifications to the new security screening measures are in effect at Raleigh-Durham International Airport following a mandate from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to eliminate liquids and gels from carry-on luggage.
The most significant changes to the security measures include mandatory shoe screening for all travelers and the admission of up to 4 ounces of non-prescription medicine. These modifications allows for the same level of security that has been in place since last Thursday, but is intended to minimize impact on travelers.
Passengers may not have liquids, gels, or aerosols of any size at the screening checkpoint or in the cabin of the aircraft. This includes beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray, liquid cosmetics, and other items of similar consistency; such items may be transported in checked baggage.
Passengers may have:
Baby formula/milk and baby food in small containers if a baby or small child is traveling.
Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ID.
Essential other non-prescription medicines not to exceed 4 ounces (120ml) per container.
Liquids or gels for diabetic passengers who indicate a need for such items to address their medical condition. Quantities are limited to no greater than 8 ounces (240ml) per container.
Solid cosmetics and personal hygiene items such as lipstick in a tube, solid deodorant, lip balm, and similar solids.
Travelers are advised to pack light and leave liquids at home. Customers may return items to their vehicles; pack the liquids and gels in their checked luggage and/or dispose of the items.
These polices apply to all domestic and international flights originating in the United States, including flights to the United Kingdom. For flights to the United Kingdom, TSA security officers will perform an additional physical inspection of all carry-on baggage at the departure gate. For all other flights, random gate inspections will be conducted.
Please note that for flights originating in the United Kingdom, local policies regarding carry-on baggage will apply. These policies tend to be more stringent than United States policy. You may wish to check with you air carrier for additional details on United Kingdom requirements.
Once travelers are past the checkpoint, beverages can be purchased but must be consumed prior to boarding the plane. Other liquid items that are not considered beverages (mouthwash, perfume, toothpaste, etc.) will not be sold.
