Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s Terminal 1 Receives LEED Certified Designation

RDU AIRPORT, N.C. – The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority today announced that Terminal 1, which opened earlier this year after a major renovation, has been awarded the LEED Certified designation. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.

“The Terminal 1 project demonstrates the Airport Authority’s commitment to sustainable business practices and energy efficiency,” said Airport Authority President and CEO Michael Landguth. “From the beginning, our team set its sights on achieving LEED certification. This designation illustrates the team’s hard work and that of our architects and construction firms.”

The Terminal 1 project was a major renovation of a building that originally opened in 1982. Construction crews removed the outer walls of the building and reconstructed it using LEED guidelines when possible.

The Airport Authority achieved LEED certification for implementing measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Strategies implemented in the renovation of Terminal 1 include the use of low-emitting paints and coatings, the recycling of construction debris, the use of roofing materials with a high solar reflectance index and water use reduction tactics, among others.

Over 61,800 projects are currently participating in the LEED rating systems.
