Raleigh-Durham International Airport Announces New Service to Salt Lake City and Philadelphia
RDU Airport, NC – Airport Director Mike Landguth today announced new air service on Delta Air Lines from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Salt Lake City and Philadelphia. The announcement was made at the monthly meeting of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board. At the meeting, the board also voted on the final art piece to be featured in Terminal 1.
From RDU to Salt Lake City
The new non-stop service between RDU and Salt Lake City begins Sunday, Dec. 22. This marks the return of service from RDU to Utah’s capital. Delta previously offered the service from 2005-2009.
“We’re glad Delta has decided to resume service to Salt Lake City,” said Landguth, “This new flight connects RDU to all of Delta’s domestic hubs and provides our customers with easier flight connections to many destinations in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest.”
The flight to Salt Lake City will depart RDU at 7:45 a.m. and arrive in Salt Lake City at 10:30 a.m. local time. The return flight leaves at 5 p.m. and arrives at RDU at 10:51 p.m. Delta will use 150-seat Airbus A-320 aircraft for the route.
More than 54,000 people travel between RDU and Salt Lake City each year. The flight is timed to provide convenient one-stop connections between RDU and cities such as Portland, Spokane and Eugene, Oregon, as well as popular vacation destinations like Cody/Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
From RDU to Philadelphia
Delta Air Lines will also launch four daily non-stop flights from RDU to Philadelphia beginning Monday, September 3. The new service will be aboard 50-seat Canadair regional jets.
“Philadelphia is an extremely important business destination for our customers,” said Landguth. “This new service provides additional options to reach Philadelphia and will enhance the already strong business ties between our two cities.”
Flights will depart RDU at 7 a.m., 10:55 a.m., 1:40 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. each Monday-Friday. Flights depart Philadelphia at 8:55 a.m., Noon, 3:35 p.m. and 6:25 p.m. on those same days. There are no Saturday flights.
An average of 464 people travel between RDU and Philadelphia each day.
Board Approves Art For Terminal 1
The board today also approved the third and final art concept for Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing a major renovation.
Gordon Huether’s Highwire Travelers will be suspended above the Terminal 1 bag claim lobby. The sculpture takes a whimsical approach to mimicking common airport scenes.
The sculpture is comprised of seven abstract figures. A few are on tightropes high above the terminal floor balancing luggage on long poles. Others are sitting on beams lower to the floor, incorporating the building’s architecture into the piece.
Highwire Travelers will join Catherine Widgery’s Ripples and Martin Donlin’s Metamorphosis in Terminal 1. View renderings of the three art pieces.
Passenger Traffic Remains Flat
During the June, 426,151 passengers departed RDU, down 0.5 percent compared to June 2012. Throughout the month, 411,928 passengers arrived at RDU, down 0.3 percent compared to the same period last year.
For the first six months of 2013, the number of passengers traveling through RDU remained flat, as predicted, due to changes in the aviation industry and the effects of the economic downturn.
