Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Awarded Certificate of Achievement for Financial Reporting
RDU Airport, NC – The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority today announced it has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009. The Certificate of Achievement is presented to government units that achieve the highest standards in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.
The award was made by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
“This is a substantive achievement,” said Joe Styres, the Airport Authority's deputy director, business, finance and administration. “Producing a CAFR alone illustrates the Airport Authority's commitment to transparency to the community, bond holders and the airport's governing body. That and receiving the certificate make a significant statement about the quality of the Airport Authority's annual financial reporting.”
The Airport Authority submitted its annual report to the GFOA for the first time last year. The annual report for fiscal year ending March 31, 2009 goes beyond the Airport Authority's past reports.
“In this latest report, we go beyond the numbers to analyze their economic meaning,” said Styres. “We use current and past data to show trends and how they relate to the Airport Authority’s economic health. This is the type of information bond holders and other stakeholders want in order to maintain confidence in an organization and its financial reporting.”
The Airport Authority's CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story.
Passenger Numbers Remain Positive
The number of passengers traveling through RDU during May rose slightly compared to the same month last year. The Airport Authority’s monthly activity report shows a 0.4 percent increase in passengers compared to the same month last year. The statistics were released today at the monthly meeting of the Airport Authority board.
A total of 786,199 passengers traveled through RDU in May compared to 782,978 in May 2009. In the first six months of the year, 3,489,958 passengers have used RDU compared to 3,480,261 during the same period last year.
The amount of cargo processed through RDU also rose in May by nearly 12 percent. More than 16 million pounds of cargo passed through RDU compared to just over 14 million in May 2009.
