New Board Leadership Begins Tenure at Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority

Apr 16, 2009

Board votes to restructure parking rates; Redbox DVD rental service to debut at RDU

RDU Airport, NC – Durham resident Robert D. Teer, Jr. today assumed the role of chairman of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board of Directors. The Board met today for its monthly meeting.

Teer, who has served on the Board since 1998, recently served as the vice-chair and also as the chairman of the airport's Land and Development Committee, a position he held from 1998 through 2008. He succeeds Michael Weeks of Wake County and is president of Teer Associates.

Joining Teer on the Board's leadership team are Terry Yeargan of Wake County as vice chair, Kim Frazier of Raleigh as secretary and Toni Lipscomb of the City of Durham as treasurer. In addition to Michael Weeks, the following representatives also serve on the Board: Geoff Elting, City of Raleigh; Craigie Sanders, Durham County; Tommy Hunt, Durham County.

RDU is governed by the eight-member Airport Authority Board. The cities of Durham and Raleigh and the counties of Durham and Wake each appoint two members to the Board for two-year terms.

Board Approves Parking Rate Change
The Board today approved a proposal to restructure the parking rates in the daily section of the airport's parking garage. The change is an effort to better manage garage parking, ensuring spaces are available for customers parking for more than 24 hours. The maximum daily rate of $10 will remain unchanged. However, the hourly rate for parking in the daily section will increase from $1 to $2 per hour up to the $10 maximum.

Today, sections of daily parking are routinely closed because all spaces are taken. A study by the RDU parking staff found that customers picking up or dropping off passengers were parking in the daily lots even though they were parking for less than three hours. The current hourly rate for both sections is $1. The new structure will encourage short-term parkers to park in the hourly lots, reserving daily spaces for long-term parkers. The hourly rate will remain $1 per hour with a daily maximum of $24 per day.

The Board also voted to modify the parking rate structure in the airport's park and ride lots. Currently, the rates in the park and ride lots are $1 per hour with a maximum of $6 per day. The new rate will be a flat fee of $6 per day.

The changes will go into effect this summer.

Redbox to Offer Passengers DVD Rentals
The Board today also approved an agreement with Redbox Automated Retail, LLC of South Holland, Ill., to provide DVD rentals in the airport's two terminals. For $1 per day, customers can rent a DVD from the self-service, retail kiosks that are often found in supermarkets and other high-traffic areas.

Passengers can rent videos from Redbox at the beginning of their trip. The movies can be returned at RDU or at another Redbox location. Travelers can also reserve their movie online and pick it up when they arrive at RDU.

The service is scheduled to begin on June 1.
