Airport Authority Supportive of Midway's Restructuring
RDU Airport, NC – Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority officials expressed concern today for Midway Airlines employees who lost their jobs as a result of the company's filing of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, but support the carrier's action to reorganize its business.
"We regret that the economic conditions affecting Midway Airlines resulted in the retrenchment of its workforce," said John Brantley, Airport Director. "But the airline business is not unlike other industries in our region and throughout the nation facing similar difficulties. We believe Midway's action will better position the airline to maintain its viability and prospects for the future."
Midway Airlines is one of 13 major air carriers serving Raleigh-Durham International Airport. "The diversity and strength of air carriers serving the airport today ensures the continuity of good air service," said Brantley. Midway's announced service reductions represent 102 of 650 daily frequencies at RDU or a 16% reduction total airport operations. "This fall's schedule of operations will roughly equal what we started the year with," said Brantley.
Total passenger activity by all carriers serving RDU has continued to grow throughout the first half of 2001 at a rate of 6 percent over last year. This has slowed from double-digit growth rates of the previous two years.
Midway flight destinations being discontinued between today and August 31 are Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Washington/Dulles, Los Angeles, Birmingham, Rochester, Dayton, San Jose, and Providence.
