Terminal 1 Timelapse: The Security Checkpoint

A few weeks ago, we posted a time lapse of the ticketing lobby inside Terminal 1. The response was so strong that we’ve decided to make this a regular feature. Today’s time-lapse video is of the security checkpoint. This is an area of the terminal that has seen a dramatic change. 

The security checkpoint will be located on a balcony and you will get to it from the ticketing level. So, what are some other things to look for?

• We started the time-lapse photography after TSA removed screening equipment. You can see the outline of the machines and tables if you look closely at the floor mats. It’s easy to see that the machines were angled, which meant a lot of turning and twisting to get through screening. Upon reopening, there will be four screening lines and it will be a straight shot right through the checkpoint. 

• You’ll also see the old escalator disappear in the opening shots. Do you remember that in Terminal 1 the checkpoint was spread across two levels?  Now, the checkpoint will be entirely on one level. 

• Take note of the height of the ceiling. You can see how low it is in the beginning. Compare that to the last few frames when you can see the gridwork for the new ceiling panels come into view. 

• Do you notice that the space brightens toward the end? The security checkpoint was previously without windows. Now, the majority of the space is surrounded by large, floor-to-ceiling translucent panels that let in the sunlight without the harsh, direct glare. 

• About half-way through the video, you’ll see what appears to be a plastic wrap on the right side of the video. That’s exactly what it is! After the building’s exterior was removed, contractors more-or-less “shrink-wrapped” the building to protect it against moisture and wind, allowing work to progress rapidly during the winter months.
