Spring Break Travel 101

Feb 25, 2014

Whether you’re flying home to North Dakota or jetting off to somewhere tropical and warm, it’s time to shut those books and pack your bags because Spring Break 2014 is here. We’re pretty sure that you’ve flown before, but to make sure your trip through RDU is super easy, here are some Spring Break travel tips.

Arrive Early

The most basic rule of flying is don’t cut it too close. You never know if there’s a queue at the security checkpoint or if you will need more time at the ticket counter or check-in kiosk. We suggest giving yourself 90 minutes from the time you arrive at the airport to your scheduled departure time.

Check Your Flight Status

It may be Spring Break here, but in many parts of the country, it’s still quite wintry. Even if you are heading to a tropical destination, your plane may be coming from somewhere quite cold. It’s always a good idea to check your flight status before hopping the shuttle to the airport… just in case.

Know Where to Go

AirTran and Southwest are in Terminal 1 at RDU. Get the latest info on the Terminal 1 opening this Spring. All other airlines are in Terminal 2. If you’re a U.S. Airways or American Airlines customer, remember to check-in at the ticket counter for the carrier listed on your ticket.

Be Checkpoint Savvy

Navigating the security checkpoint isn’t usually the highlight of a Spring Break trip, but you can make it quick and easy.  First, have your ID out and ready. Second, take the contents of your pockets (and your belt) and put them in your carry-on bag until after you are screened. Third, make sure you’re following the 3-1-1 rule on liquids. And don’t forget, shoes and outer coats must be off for screening.

Earn Some Miles

Did you know you can earn air miles, cash or rewards when you fly through RDU? When you park in the garage, dine at one of our restaurants or grab a magazine for the flight, you can rack up for your next trip. Learn more about Thanks Again.

Take It with You

Did you know all of the menu items from The Shops of RDU can be packaged to go with you to the gate or on the plane? Take advantage of this for those long flights.

Plug In and Relax

In Terminal 2, look for the power outlets adjacent to seats. You’ll find standard outlets, as well as USB connections. Plug in and relax using our free Wi-Fi while waiting for your flight to depart. These seats will be available in Terminal 1 as soon as the terminal opens.

Don’t be afraid to ask

When the good times are over and it’s time to return to school, check for your school’s airport shuttle schedule, if available. Once you arrive at RDU, if you need help figuring out transportation or assistance in general, visit our Guest Services Ambassadors at the information desks in Bag Claim. We’re more than happy to help.
