Coming Together: A Terminal 1 Time Lapse
Looking at Terminal 1 today, it’s hard to believe that construction began just a year ago this month. I didn’t realize just how much change could happen to a building in so little time. The building is coming together and looking great.
The first week of construction, when crews were literally beginning to pull the carpet out of the building, we had the idea to document the progress via time lapse photos. The idea was to go to the same spot every week and take photos. While we haven’t made it every week, you can definitely see the evolution of the building.
Below is a video of a year’s worth of construction in the ticketing lobby. The shots are from the same spot, but the zoom is a little different from shot to shot. You’ll see the red and blue finish coming down, the walls blocking security open up and a new escalator and staircase be put into place. After the video, scroll down for more construction updates.[wpvideo pNNShdPM]
So, what else is happening at Terminal 1?
- You may have noticed the large canopies over the curbsides. Now that the steel is in place, crews are working on pouring concrete under the canopies for new sidewalks.
- The building is now fully enclosed and the air conditioning has been turned on. (For me, this has been the best milestone yet!)
- The ceiling grids are being installed along the concourse. In the gate waiting areas, the ceilings are angled and much higher than before.
- Contractors are busy assembling the automated bag handling system. It looks like a giant blue puzzle, but the many sections of conveyor belt will take your bags from the ticket counter, through a screening process and to the make-up area. There, it will be loaded onto tugs for your flight.
Let me know what you think of the time lapse video. Would you like to see more areas of the building? I’d also like to know what you’re interested in about Terminal 1 as we move closer to completion.
