Electronic Kiosks Ease Traveler Check In; RDU Prepares for Name Change
RDU Airport, NC – This week's highlights at Raleigh-Durham International Airport:
Terminal 2 to Feature More Electronic Kiosks for Ticketless Travelers
Construction crews this week began the placement of electronic kiosks in the Terminal 2 airline check-in area. When phase one of the terminal opens this fall, it will feature 40 electronic kiosks.
Six kiosks will also allow travelers with no bags to check in on any of the four airlines operating from Terminal 2.
To ease congestion in the airline check-in lobby and simplify the process for ticketless travelers, the kiosks are placed away from the airline check-in counters, separating kiosk users from passengers who need to check in with an airline representative.
Designed by renowned airport architect Curt Fentress, the terminal was designed to guide passengers easily from the curb to their gate.
The airline check-in area is column-free, offering passengers a view beyond the lobby to the security checkpoint and the concourse. The airline counters are located in the middle of the lobby. Gone are the counters against the wall that often create congestion and confusion.
RDU Prepares for Name Change
When Terminal 2 opens this fall, Terminal A will be renamed Terminal 1. Over the next few weeks, RDU will begin placing signage around the airport to prepare passengers for the change.
The numeric designation follows industry standards and addresses the elimination of a facility know as Terminal B when it was combined with Terminal A in the early 1990s.
The following airlines will operate from Terminal 2 when it opens this fall: American, Delta, United and Air Canada.
The following airlines will operate from Terminal 1: AirTran, Continental, JetBlue, Northwest, Southwest and US Airways.
