United Kingdom Travel Advisory

Aug 11, 2006

RDU Airport, NC – The following information is offered for international travelers utilizing RDU’s daily non-stop service to London’s Gatwick Airport and traveling one-stop to other destinations in the United Kingdom.

On Aug. 10, 2006 the Transportation Security Administration issued a security directive requiring the elimination of liquids and gels from carry-on luggage at airport security checkpoints.

Passengers are no longer permitted to bring any liquids, gels, creams, perfumes, cologne, cosmetics, shampoo, suntan lotion, toothpaste and other items of similar consistency on the airplane. Liquids include soft drinks, bottled water and other beverages.

Upon returning to the U.S. from the U.K., all carry-on luggage must be processed as checked baggage. Nothing may be carried in passengers' pockets. When returning from the U.K. passengers may only take the following items through the airport security checkpoint in a single transparent plastic bag:

Pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (money, credit cards, identity cards, etc. but not handbags or purses)
Travel documents essential for the journey (passports and travel tickets)
Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (a diabetic kit for example), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
Eye glasses and sunglasses, without cases
Contact lens cases, without bottles of solution
For those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (wipes, creams, disposal bags)
Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed
Tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
Keys (but no electrical key fobs)
Personal electronic devices have also been banned from flights leaving the U.K.; these include laptop computers, mobile phones and iPods.

As part of the elevated security measures, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will increase enforcement efforts in international arrival areas. Passengers on international flights will be subject to heightened inspection upon arrival in the U.S.
