FAA Limits Travelers to One Carry-On

Oct 09, 2001

RDU Airport, NC – The Federal Aviation Administration yesterday advised travelers that they are now limited to one carry-on and one personal item on all flights. The new security measure will allow airport security teams to more closely screen passenger carry-on items. It will also help alleviate long lines that have resulted since the new security measures were implemented after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Electronic devices, such as laptops and cell phones, may also be subjected to additional screening. Passengers are asked to remove laptops from their cases so both the laptop and its case can be X-rayed separately.

The FAA also advised travelers that they may be required to show their government-issued ID at the gate with their boarding passes. Passengers are currently required to show proper identification when they check in.

E-ticket travelers were also advised to check with their airlines to ensure they have the proper documentation needed to proceed to the gate. Only ticketed passengers are allowed beyond security checkpoints. Exceptions are made for individuals with special medical or parental needs.

The FAA also released a list of items that will be confiscated from carry-on luggage. The following items should be placed in checked baggage: knives, cutting instruments of any kind, corkscrews, baseball and softball bats, golf clubs, pool cues, ski poles and hockey sticks. Travelers and bags may be subjected to additional screening.
